Doherty Blast Nov 10, 2023
Dear Doherty Families,
We had a fantastic turnout for our Parent Conferences. The teachers enjoy being able to share how the students are progressing and getting to hear from families. We did learn that several families are not accessing the classroom newsletters. We strongly encourage you to view these each week as they contain information about the students’ learning and essential information about upcoming events. To efficiently navigate teacher websites and locate teacher newsletters, here is a short video. Here are the slides seen in the video.
Our Hives are in full swing! These teams encompass students from kindergarten to fifth grade in each Hive. The Hives are delving deep into the realm of service learning, thoroughly exploring various avenues for improving their communities. They have discussed the distinctions between direct and indirect service learning, as well as the concept of advocacy. Service learning plays an important role in your child’s Doherty experience, bridging the gap between classroom learning and real-world community engagement. Engaging in service learning helps students acknowledge the diversity and need of their communities, while acquiring practical skills, nurturing their career and personal interests, and becoming more actively involved citizens. We eagerly anticipate witnessing the progress of each Hive’s endeavors.

Announcements
Grandparents and Special Persons’ Day
Grandpersons and Special Persons’ Day is Tuesday, Nov. 21. We would like to send an invitation to the grandpeople in your child’s life to come and see what Doherty is all about. Please fill out this form and return it to the office by Monday, Nov. 13 (this is a different date than what is on the form; please use this date).
Save the Date — Books for Lunch 2024!
The 2024 Books for Lunch committee, chaired by Seven Hills parents Lisa Briquet and Lalitha Chunduri, is honored to present this year’s guest author, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Andrew Sean Greer! Please join us in the Madison Ballroom at The Summit Hotel on Feb. 2 for lunch, community, and an engaging address from Greer. Please visit 7hills.org/BFL to purchase tickets and learn more about the event, Greer, and his work.
After the Bell Updates
Encore Club
Encore Club is in full swing! We are now launching a weekly sign-up, with options to pick up at 4:15 p.m. or stay until 6 p.m. This is all available in your parent portal the Friday prior to the month starting. If you need a drop in, please fill out a request under the Student Logistics request, and we will approve if space is available.
Winter Holiday Care
We are offering two days: a half day program held at both campuses on Dec. 15 and Jan. 2 on the Hillsdale Campus, when school is still closed. The link for registration will be available by next week. Be on the lookout!
Parent Euchre Night — Next Week on Thursday, Nov. 16!
Doherty and Lotspeich parents: join us for a night of parental socializing (and cards) at MadTree on Thursday, Nov. 16, at 7 p.m.! If you’re new to the glorious game of euchre, don’t fret — it’s (relatively) easy to learn, and you’ll be among patient Midwesterners. The hardest part is not getting wing sauce on the cards. Let us know you’re coming by grabbing a “euchre player” slot in the sign ups here. See you at the table with the blue and yellow balloons! No interest in cards but still want to hang? Come on out!
Parent Coffee/Holiday Social
Please join your Doherty PC after drop off in the basement of Bean & Barley on Friday, Dec. 8, for coffee and socializing ahead of the holiday break! See you there!
Save the Date(s)!!
We have two February events for you to put on your calendar: Books for Lunch on Friday, Feb. 2, at The Summit Hotel (this is an adults-only lunch event), and the Winter Family Social on Friday, Feb. 16, from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. at Urban Air (bring the whole fam!). More details to come.
Parent Walking Club
We are a group of parents who get together bi-weekly on Wednesdays after morning drop off to talk and walk the lower soccer field on the Hillsdale Campus. All divisions are welcome, and no RSVP is required. This group provides you a great opportunity to connect with other community members all while getting your steps in! Please park in the lower field parking area; campus guest passes will be passed out to ensure visibility, for security purposes. When inclement weather occurs, we gather at Element Eatery to chat. Our next meet up is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 29, from 8:30-9:30 a.m. Subsequent dates are Dec. 13 and Jan. 10, 2024. I look forward to chatting with you soon. Carolyn Klein (Mom of Spencer, 11th grade, and Courtney, seventh grade)
