With so much going on at this busy time of year, it’s difficult sometimes to choose what to feature here.
One highlight of the week has been a strong late-season run by our boys varsity soccer team. With decisive wins over Greenville High School and Cincinnati Christian High School, this talented team, already sectional champions, will compete on Saturday for the District championship. Congratulations to Coach Mike Combs and the team on what has been – already – a great season. Go, Stingers!
This week has also offered a feast of the arts. Last weekend, our Upper School students mounted four performances of “Clue!,” a murder mystery based on the Parker Brothers board game (a regular feature of my childhood summers!). Set in 1950s Washington, D.C. (think McCarthyism and “the Red Scare”), this high-energy mystery cum comedy, with its elaborate costumes, lighting, and movable sets, exploited the full capacity of our new Schiff Center auditorium. The show evoked such strong interest among the Upper School students that Marc Raia, Upper School theater teacher and director, chose to double-cast the show, dividing 30 student actors into two casts of 15, who, together, performed four shows over 36 hours. The fast-paced, almost manic performances and rapid-fire scene changes showcased the astonishing energy and charisma of the cast and crew. It was, as usual, a thoroughly entertaining experience.
To end the week, the Lotspeich fifth graders staged a fabulous performance of “The Lion King,” featuring committed vocal performances, clever staging, choreography, and costumes from a dedicated — and astonishingly confident — troupe of performers. The cast presented two performances, delighting both the Lower School students from Doherty and Lotspeich in the morning and then their families and friends in the afternoon. Congratulations to Robin Wilson and Natalie Bird, and, of course, to the fifth grade students for such a wonderful production.
